SQL server setup for Operations Manager

From the high level overview of the project, this post will detail how to create the SQL server database for the SCOM01 & SCOM02 Servers.

 

Pre-requisites to installing SQL server

Create the following accounts for SQL in Active Directory (if they dont already exist):

SQLSVC – for sql services

SQLguy – for sql tasks

SQLBackup – for a backup account to SQL

SQL Server DB01 Build:

Pre-configuration tasks: 

Create the following accounts and groups in Active Directory:

Domain\OMAA  Operations Manager server action account

Domain\OMDAS Operations Manager and Data Access service account

Domain\OMSQL Operations Manager  SQL Service account

Domain\OMAdmins   Operations Manager Administrators Security Group

 

 Creation of the SQL Server 

Log into DB01 with the following account: Domain\OMAA

Insert/Add the SQL 2012 SP1 ISO. Select your drive and then select Installation. Select New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.

The Setup support rules will be checked. Select OK to continue.

Enter the license key. Not shown here, if you have a license for SQL server please enter it now, if not use the trial edition. Select Next.

Accept the license terms and select Next.

SQL server will now use the windows update agent to check Microsoft for any updates to the SQL install process. In this case I found and update which needed to be installed before installed SQL server.

Install the pre-install update for SQL server 2012 SP1.After installed the Setup support roles will be checked before the Installation can proceed. Select Next.

The Setup Role asks what you would like to install for SQL server, select SQL server feature installation.

Make sure that all of the following SQL Services are installed:

  • Database Engine Services
  • Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search
  • Reporting Services – Native
  • Management tools – Basic and Complete (for running queries and configuring SQL Services)

The only feature I am not installing is the Documentation Components and Distributed Relay Client. Select Next to continue.

The installation rules will now be checked. Select Next to continue.

The default SQL Instance is set up. Leave at defaults and select Next to continue.

Check the disk space requirements. The VM is 100GB and will have more than enough space. If not, you can always allocate more space in VMware. Select Next to continue.

On the Server Configuration use the SQLsvc account for the SQL Server Agent, Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services. Select Next to continue.

Make sure the collation is set to the following:

Select Next to continue.

Set up the following accounts as access to the Database Engine:

OMAA, SQLadmin, SQLbackup,sqlguy, OMDAS,OMSQL

Set up the following accounts as access to the Analysis Services:

OMAA, SQLadmin, SQLbackup,sqlguy, OMDAS,OMSQL

Select Next to continue.

Select Install and configure on Reporting Services and select Next.

On error reporting keep the defaults and select Next.

The Installation Configuration Rules are checked. Everything is working correctly, select Next to continue.

A ready check of what will be installed to SQL is performed. Select Next to begin the installation.

The install can take up to an hour. After the install you should see the following success screen:

Install Completed

Select Close to Continue.

SQL Server has been installed, now set up your SCOM01 and SCOM02 servers.
