In our last post we set up some Active Directory users accounts for our environment. We now need to create a SQL server for the System Center Configuration Manager install to proceed.
Installation of SQL Server
We will creating a SQL server that will be connected to SCOM. The VM has already been created in part 2 of our guide and will now need the SQL server installed. Turn off the windows firewall for this install.
.Net Framework Installation, BITS, and Remote Differential Compression
From Server manager select Add roles and features, when you get to features select .Net Framework feature, and BITS. Once you select BITS you will receive another prompt:
Select Add Features.
Scroll down to select Remote Differential Compression. Select Next to continue.
Internet Information Services (IIS) will be triggered by noticing .Net framework and bits are being installed. Configuration Manager will need extra IIS components as well so this is actually good. Select Next.
IIS will need the following role services installed:
Select Next. You will be prompted for an alternate source path. This is for the .net framework 3.5 installation. Select specify an alternate source path and use D:\sources\sxs
I have selected the ability for the server to reboot itself if needed. Select Install.
After the installation has completed select close.
SQL server prerequisites
Log into the ConfigMgr server with the BLUEPALACE\SMSadmin account and mount the SQL server iso to the server. In this example, I am using SQL Server 2008.
There first some prep work that should occur, if it hasn’t been completed in a previous step
Service Accounts for the SQL box help ensure security and make management of SQL easier. These SQL accounts were created previously in the OU group in AD:
SQL Server Agent: SQLAgent Password123
SQL Server Analysis Services: SQLAnalysis Password123
SQL Server Installation
Go to the D:\ of your server and click on the autoplay icon. I get the notice seen here, but I select run the program without getting help.
The SQL server Installation Center will open with the default Planning page. Select Installation and select New installation or add features to an existing installation. You may receive another prompt, just select Run the program without getting help.
SQL server Setup support runs 7 checks to ensure minimum requirements are met. Select OK to continue.
Enter the product key on the next page and select Next. Select I accept on the license terms on the next page.
On the setup support files page select Install.
Setup Support runs various checks again. Select Next.
Select All Features with Defaults and select Next. On setup role I selected SQL Server Feature Installation.
I installed all features except for SQL Server Books Online and Microsoft Sync Framework.I removed SQL Server Books Online and Microsoft Sync Framework in order to save space on the VM. Select Next to continue.
The installation rules are checked, select next to continue.
The default instance is named. We will not be changing anything select Next to continue.
Diskspace is now checked. Select Next to continue.
The server configuration is now shown. This is how to specify different Active Directory (AD) user accounts to run SQL services. We have the option of running the agent as an AD account and the SQL Server Analysis Services as an AD account.
Select the Account Name for the SQL server agent and use BLUEPALACE\SQLAgent
Select the Account Name for the SQL server Analysis services and use BLUEPALACE\SQLAnalysis. It should look like this when you are done:
The database engine will now be provisioned. Although the SMSadmin account has access it’s good to add another account in case there’s a problem. Add the SQLguy account, select Next to continue.
Analysis Services, add the SMSadmin and Sqlguy account. Select Next to continue.
Select Install the native mode default configuration. Select Next to continue. Select Next to continue on error reporting also.
An installation and configuration check will run. Select Next.
SQL server is now ready to install, click on Install to start.
Sql server has completed installing.
Reboot sql server in case any post install data or tasks need to be run at boot.
Post SQL install tasks
After SQL has completed,Verify SQL Collation is set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
SQL server loves to use all available memory. Go to properties on SQL server and select memory. Set the MAX memory usage to what you have allocated for the virtual machine. In my case I am setting it to 4096 MB.
SQL server has been configured.
